The Client

CABI is a UK-based non-profit inter-governmental organisation focused on scientific research and publishing in agriculture and the environment. One of its flagship projects is the BioProtection Portal (bioprotectionportal.com), an open-access resource launched in 2020 to help growers and agricultural advisors worldwide identify, source, and correctly use registered biocontrol and biopesticide products. This portal plays a key role in promoting sustainable pest management and reducing reliance on chemical pesticides.

Project Highlights

  • +11,000

pages indexed in just 14 months.

  • Significant

traffic growth across USA, India, Brazil, and worldwide markets.

The Challenge

By mid-2023, the BioProtection Portal was facing significant SEO challenges that were limiting its growth:

  • Technical SEO issues: A new search system implementation had caused product pages to be “noindex” and orphaned, severely impacting indexability.
  • Incorrect hreflang and canonical tags: This led to poor international SEO performance.
  • Content challenges: Existing content was not optimised for organic traffic, and creating high-quality, multilingual content in a highly technical niche was complex.
  • User experience: The site needed better UX to drive engagement, especially on the product search module.

Objectives

The project had clear, ambitious goals:

  • Surpass pre-indexation-issue visibility levels from 2022.
  • Increase page views for product pages by improving indexability and UX.
  • Drive organic traffic in key markets (USA, Brazil, India, Canada, Kenya).
  • Elevate the site as a trusted, authoritative reference in the field.

Our Strategy

  • Phase 1

    Technical SEO Fixes

Our first priority was to resolve the technical barriers to indexation:

    • Enabled indexation for product pages.
    • Improved crawlability with HTML sitemaps for each language.
    • Corrected hreflang and canonical tag implementations.
    • Addressed prerendering issues and improved language and country display.
  • Phase 2

    Content and International SEO

With the technical foundation restored, we focused on building topical authority:

    • Conducted extensive semantic audits across key markets (USA, India, Kenya, Bangladesh, Brazil).
    • Produced high-quality, SEO-optimised content in multiple languages.
    • Developed an editorial strategy with resource pages and semantic cocoons.
    • Enhanced existing articles to target high-value queries.
    • Improved EEAT (Expertise, Experience, Authority, Trustworthiness) signals with author and reviewer pages.
  • Phase 3

    UX and Visibility Enhancements

Ongoing work in 2025 is focused on:

    • Improving the search module’s UX and accessibility.
    • Enhancing Core Web Vitals, especially for product pages.
    • Expanding content depth and breadth across page templates.
    • Launching a strategic link building campaign to further boost visibility.

Implementation

A dedicated task force at Eskimoz led the project, supported by robust project management tools including a dedicated roadmap, content calendar, and custom reporting dashboards to maintain alignment with CABI teams and ensure transparency.

Challenges Overcome

  • Complex international SEO: Navigated varying local regulations and languages with a sophisticated data management system.
  • Technical content production: Balanced scientific accuracy with SEO best practices through close collaboration with CABI’s internal experts.
  • Limited competition: Without direct SEO benchmarks, we built a unique strategy to establish the portal as a trusted reference.

Results

The impact of the campaign has been significant:

  • +11,000 pages indexed in just 14 months.
  • Substantial increases in visibility and organic traffic across all target markets (USA, India, Brazil, worldwide).
  • Enhanced user engagement and improved rankings for key biocontrol-related queries.

Why This Campaign Stands Out

This project exemplifies how combining deep technical SEO expertise with high-quality international content and a focus on user experience can drive remarkable growth—even for a non-profit, highly specialised site.

It’s a story of close collaboration between Eskimoz and CABI, where a tailored strategy addressed complex technical issues, elevated content quality, and established the BioProtection Portal as a leading global resource in sustainable agriculture.
